Dr Muhammad AkramResearch Fellow - Carbon Capture

Dr Akram is a Research Fellow leading the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCUS) research theme for the Translational Energy Research Centre and Energy 2050 at the University of Sheffield. His expertise lies in the fields of combustion, carbon capture, gas turbines and waste to energy technology, amongst others. Dr Akram completed a PhD in “optimisation of co-combustion of high moisture biomass with coal in a bubbling fluidised bed combustor” from the University of South Wales in 2012. Currently, he is working on a number of EU and BEIS-funded multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with academia and industry. He has published three book chapters and several articles in peer reviewed journals and presented his research at a number of international conferences.

Dr Akram will work at the Translational Energy Research Centre to further research to decarbonise industrial processes and technology and reduce emissions. His areas of expertise include economical carbon capture from gas, coal and biomass firing, post-combustion carbon capture and utilisation of CO2 to produce jet fuel.

This research will use several of the pilot-scale plants at the facility, including the Fischer-Tropsch (Gas to Liquid) plant, High Pressure Heat Exchanger (HPHE) testbed, the amine CO2 capture plant and the rotating packed bed CO2 capture plant.
